General description :
The old fortified town of Montaut is created in 1308 to help the setting-up of new inhabitants there and the agricultural development of the area at the border in between of Béarn and Bigorre. Jointly established by the Viscountess of Béarn and the very close abbey of Saint-Pé, it has to counter the presence of the king of France, who has taken control of Bigorre in 1302 and who threatens their interests. This route is a good way of discovering the agricultural and industrial evolution of this ancient fortified town, as well as the rural architecture in the Pays de Nay.
