Bastide de Lestelle-Bétharram

At the edge of Bigorre, Lestelle-Bétharram, founded in 1335 by Gaston II of Foix, was a place of passage between the Béarnaise valleys and the Bigorre allowing transhumance. The city has the characteristics of the walled towns of the fourteenth century: square, streets in a grid on either side. Two main streets taper and join together at the end of the village. During the 15th century, a chapel, "Notre Dame", was built on the spot where many miracles occurred. Followed by a sanctuary, a Way of the Cross, today it is a departure point for easy hikes for the whole family. Since then, this religious centre has been highly frequented by pilgrims.
